Things To Do With Fractals In Bryce
Chapter 1: A Simple Mountain (Part 2)

After accepting the Terrain Editor settings, back in the main working window, I adjust the hight, position and allover size of the "thing" and y-rotate it to show the camera its best side. I can, of course, adjust all of this again later on.

Next I go to the Materials Lab, with the Terrain still selected. To import the Fractal as a texture I click in the A column in either or both the Ambience and Diffusion rows and on the little "P" button underneath the texture preview. This loads the "Leonardo Oscar" as the default 2D Texture.

Clicking on the Texture Source button, the one to the right above the Leonardo Oscar, drops me into the Pictures Editor. Clicking on one of the empty little preview fields opens a dialogue which lets me find and load the Fractal. In the picture below I deleted the Leonardo Oscar first. This is not necessary, it would be deleted anyway after saving, quitting Bryce and then opening the file again. However, deleting obsolete textures eases Bryce's demand on computing power, so it seems like a good habit to get into.

step 4

Accepting the fractal as the current texture returns me to the Materials Lab, where I choose the settings below for the render you saw at the beginning of this chapter.
For mapping a Fractal onto Terrains or Lattices which are modelled from the same Fractal, always choose Parametric or Object Top as your mapping mode to guard yourself against unexpected results.

step 5

Feel free to experiment with those settings for the surface properties - you never know what you may discover.
Hint: checking the A column in the Amnbience row will give you a much brighter, more saturated result.
